lives of those in need? Healthcare for the Homeless is looking for
compassionate and self-motivated individuals to join our direct
care team as Certified Medical Assistants (CMA). The CMA will
support providers in the administration of patient care in assigned
clinical areas by assisting with patient examinations, procedures,
diagnostic studies, treatments, and dressing changes, and perform
general administrative duties. The CMA will meet and engage with
uninsured or underinsured individuals, patients experiencing
homelessness or housing insecurity, and those referred to the HCH
program by sources such as local hospitals, emergency rooms,
healthcare providers, and community agencies, as well as
individuals met during Street Outreach.
Responsibilities
- Review patient charts before scheduled appointments to confirm
that all requested lab work, diagnostic procedures have been
completed and that reports have been returned and are accessible to
the provider.
- Review charts for current medications, immunizations, treatments,
height, weight and problem list.
- Prepare instrument trays for procedures, including sterile
procedures.
- Obtain and record vital signs, review risk assessment questions
as appropriate and update the preventative care flow sheet,
allergies and medications.
- Direct patients to examination rooms and assist with preparation
for exams, including helping them undress/dress and get on/off
examination tables.
- Assist providers with examinations and procedures, including
surgical procedures, gynecological exams, diagnostic studies, and
treatments. Operate and monitor functioning of equipment, hand
instruments to the provider.
- Monitor patient during and following procedures; look for
reactions and other visible complications; react to emergency
situations; notify the appropriate person in the event of a medical
emergency.
- Conduct hearing, vision and EKG tests as ordered by the
provider.
- Under the direction of the provider, administer vaccines per
immunizations schedules.
- Perform Point of Care Testing in accordance with the HCH program
laboratory guidelines and handle specimens using Universal
Precautions.
- Complete laboratory forms, process samples, and ship them to
reference labs.
- Address patient clinical complaints, ensuring immediate and
effective responses and resolutions. Refer to the Lead Clinical
Coordinator or Practice Manager as appropriate.
- Conduct appointments for patients needing blood pressure checks,
throat cultures, personalized education, and other care as directed
by the provider.
- Obtain patient signatures on consent forms for immunizations and
invasive procedures.
- Serve as a liaison between the provider and other departments and
agencies.
- With provider approval, assist with medication refills as
appropriate.
- Clean, wrap and sterilize instruments after procedures as
required and as appropriate to the specific procedure. Schedule
sterile processing pick-up, as appropriate within the practice.
- Participate in quality assurance activities and all trainings and
seminars as assigned.
- Serve as a liaison between the provider, other departments and
agencies.
- As required, maintain stock of health information pamphlets;
provide pamphlets to patients. Direct patients to proper sources of
information.
- Keep nursing area and exam rooms stocked, clean and orderly.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED, required.
- Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant program.
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant
(RMA) required within 6 months from hire.
- Basic Life Support certification, required.
- 2 - 3 years of experience in a health care setting, performing
similar work activities including but not limited to, clerical,
billing or insurance processing.
- Basic computer keyboarding and data entry skills, required.
- Experience and/or willingness to work with vulnerable
populations.
- Valid Driver's License or the ability to transport self to and
from off-site locations.
